Now that P2PU: School of Webcraft has been completed, I'm looking for new challenges to further my career as a web developer. Lots to learn. Baby steps.
What to learn ... JavaScript, jQuery, PHP, Ruby, CSS, and MySql seem to be the most sought after skills of web developer applicants. I don't expect to be proficient in everything at once, but I do expect to be good to go within one year.
First off, I'm tackling all of the lovely, interactive tutorials found on Codeacademy. I have found this to be a great site to learn Javascript. It features interactive, step-by-step guides to get you going. Codeacademy gives you immediate feedback whether you did something right or wrong. I have noticed some minor bugs, but all in all it is a solid place to start. Code Year is an offshoot from Codeacademy, that teaches you a "new interactive programming lesson every Monday". Simply subscribe via email, and you'll be on your way to becoming a wexpert (web expert?) within one year.
In addition to Codeacademy, I have been reading several books on various web design topics.
What's that? Mad Photoshop skillz? Yeah you need that too. I already have a pretty good, albeit simple, grasp of the many Photoshop tools. A nice site for MANY PS tutorials is psd tuts. This site features tutorials for all PS levels. A real solid resource to further your skills.
Ruby Monk, functioning very similar to Codeacademy, offers interactive tutorials to learn Ruby. Easy to follow. Too easy?
In addition to all of this, I have been reading several books on various web design topics.
So much to learn, so little time to accomplish.
